Mont Saint-Michel is a small rocky island about 1 km from the north coast of France in Normandy. It is well known for the medieval Benedictine Abbey and steepled church that occupies most of the 1 km diameter clump of rocks. The abbey was initially founded by the Bishop of Avranches who built a small chapel after having experienced a holly vision of Archangel Michael. The official construction of the actual walls of Mont St Michel Abbey commenced in 1023 and was completed almost 400 years later. It is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
