- The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands but seeing with new eyes. Marcel Proust
See the Suspended Houses of Pont-en-Royans
Built in the 16th century, the multi-story homes in the village of Pont-en-Royans, France sit on-top of and hang over the edge of the natural Vercors cliffs.
While it appears that the ground beneath many of the homes in this village has simply been eroded away right from under the elevated settlement, the buildings were actually built out over the precipice in the first place to maximize the limited space on the plateau on which they sit. While the site was established to facilitate a wood trade, the community now sees most of its income from tourism as people from around the world flock to the tiny town to witness the audaciously pendulous architecture.
