Become a Counselor
Most people who choose to pursue a degree in counseling have a strong desire to help others work through the challenges and difficulties of life.
Some people have had good experiences in therapy and want to help others in the way that they were helped. Others have had interactions with people who were in crisis and discovered that they enjoy the challenges and benefits helping individuals through difficult times. Some have been told that they are a good listener and comfortable to talk to and decide to use those skills in a field that feels enriching.
Counseling is a diverse field that allows you to work in areas that interest you. School counselors work with children or teens. Counselors at the university level help college students. Counselors can also work with people in the community through agencies or private practice. Some counselors prefer working with individuals, while others enjoy working with couples or groups. Whatever population a counselor decides to work with, the counseling relationship is often rewarding and growth promoting for both individuals and counselors.
The field of counseling is expanding and overall employment is expected to increase 19% between 2010 and 2020. Certain areas of counseling are expected to experience even higher rates of growth. For example, the occupational outlook for " Mental Health Counselors and Marriage and Family Therapists” projects 37% growth between 2010 and 2020.
